Nearly all the calcium in the body — about ninety-nine percent of it — is stored in bone and teeth. The remaining one percent does the interesting work: muscle contraction, nerve signaling, the clotting cascade, the release of hormones. The skeleton is, among other things, a bank the body draws on to keep that one percent constant.
The form matters, and here the chemistry is not subtle. Calcium carbonate, the cheapest and most common form, requires stomach acid to dissolve, which makes it dependent on a meal and on gastric acid output that declines with age and with acid-suppressing medication. Calcium citrate is already bound to citric acid and dissolves regardless. Studies comparing the two have found circulating blood levels roughly two and a half times higher with the citrate form.
Each tablet supplies 165 mg of elemental calcium — a deliberately moderate dose, since calcium is absorbed better in smaller amounts spread through the day than in a single large one. It is used to support normal bone health and the ordinary physiological roles calcium plays throughout the body. Hypoallergenic, with no diluents, binders, or fillers.
