Ellagic Acid

Ellagic acid is a polyphenol found in pomegranate, raspberries, walnuts, and oak — part of the chemistry a plant uses to defend its seed. This one is derived from the rind of the pomegranate, Punica granatum, which is among its densest sources and the part of the fruit most people throw away.

In the body it acts as an antioxidant, helping to neutralize free radicals and supporting the cell's defenses against oxidative stress. The gut microbiome converts a portion of it into urolithins — a family of metabolites now under close study for their role in supporting normal mitochondrial renewal, which is one of the more interesting frontiers in the nutrition of aging.
