Ginkgo biloba is a living fossil. It is the last surviving member of an order of trees that flourished before flowering plants existed, unchanged in the fossil record for roughly two hundred million years, and it survives today largely because Chinese and Japanese temple gardeners kept planting it. Its fan-shaped leaves are the source of the extract used in this capsule.
The active constituents are the flavone glycosides and terpene lactones, and they are why standardization matters. Raw leaf varies enormously with season, tree, and region; a standardized extract fixes the concentration of these compounds so that one capsule resembles the next. This product supplies 120 mg of high-potency standardized extract.
Ginkgo's flavonoids are antioxidants, meaning they help neutralize free radicals and support the body's normal defense against oxidative stress. The terpene lactones are used to support healthy circulation, particularly the peripheral microcirculation that supplies the extremities and the brain. Ginkgo has been used in traditional Chinese practice for centuries to support memory and mental clarity; it is best thought of as a slow, cumulative support rather than an acute one.
