Three botanicals with long and separate histories. Grapefruit seed extract is drawn from the seed and white pith of Citrus paradisi and is rich in flavonoids — naringenin chief among them — the bitter polyphenols that make the pith inedible and give the extract its antioxidant character.
Echinacea is the purple coneflower of the North American prairie. It was the most widely used medicinal plant among the Plains nations, and it entered the Eclectic physicians' materia medica in the 1880s, which is where most Western familiarity with it begins. It is traditionally used to support the body's normal immune function.
Artemisia annua — sweet wormwood, qīnghāo — appears in Chinese herbal texts from the fourth century. It is aromatic, bitter, and contains sesquiterpene lactones; it is traditionally used to support normal digestive and gastrointestinal function.
Held together, these are used to support the body's normal defenses and antioxidant status. This is a botanical formula in the older sense: plants used as plants, without promises attached.
