Inositol is a sugar alcohol that the body treats as something closer to a signaling molecule than a nutrient. It was once called vitamin B8, a designation later withdrawn on the grounds that humans synthesize it from glucose in the kidneys. That synthesis, however, does not always keep pace with demand, and the brain in particular holds concentrations many times higher than the blood.
Myo-inositol is the dominant form in nature and in human tissue. Its principal role is structural: it is the backbone of the phosphatidylinositols, the membrane phospholipids through which a great many hormone and neurotransmitter receptors relay their signals inward. Serotonin, insulin, and other messengers all depend on this second-messenger system to communicate across the cell membrane.
Inositol is used to support normal, healthy mood and calm, restful sleep, and it plays a role in normal insulin signaling and healthy fat metabolism in the liver. The powder form exists because effective intakes are measured in grams, not milligrams, which is impractical in capsules. It dissolves readily in water with a faint sweetness and no bitterness.
