L-Carnitine Fumarate 250 mg

Carnitine was isolated from muscle tissue in 1905 — hence the name, from the Latin caro, carnis, flesh. It is not, strictly, a vitamin; the body can make it from lysine and methionine, given enough vitamin C, iron, and B6. But endogenous production is modest, and dietary intake comes almost entirely from red meat, which is why the question of carnitine status comes up so often in people who eat little of it.

Its function is transport. Long-chain fatty acids cannot enter the mitochondrion unaided. Carnitine binds them, shuttles them across the inner membrane, and releases them for beta-oxidation. It then carries the exhaust — accumulated acyl groups — back out. Without adequate carnitine, fat cannot reach the site where it is burned.

This is the fumarate salt. Fumarate is itself a Krebs cycle intermediate, so the counter-ion is not inert ballast; it enters the same energy pathway the carnitine is serving.

Supports normal fatty acid metabolism and normal energy production, particularly in cardiac and skeletal muscle, which carry the highest carnitine concentrations in the body.
