Carnitine was isolated from muscle tissue in 1905, which is where its name comes from: carnis, flesh. Its job is transport. Long-chain fatty acids cannot cross the inner mitochondrial membrane on their own; carnitine ferries them across, and without it, fat simply cannot be burned for energy no matter how much of it is available.

The body makes carnitine from lysine and methionine, and red meat supplies the rest. Demand rises with muscular work, and the heart and skeletal muscle carry the highest concentrations in the body, precisely because they run on fat.

This powder supplies L-carnitine as L-carnitine L-tartrate, a stable crystalline salt that is less hygroscopic than free carnitine, which otherwise draws water from the air and clumps. One quarter teaspoon, approximately one gram, supplies one gram of L-carnitine L-tartrate. It plays a role in normal fatty acid and carbohydrate metabolism and in the production of cellular energy, and is used to support normal muscle recovery following exercise and healthy cardiovascular function.

Powder rather than capsules, because the useful intakes are measured in grams.
