Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in human blood and muscle, and it is usually classified as non-essential — meaning the body can make its own. That classification comes with an asterisk. Under metabolic stress, demand can outrun synthesis, which is why glutamine is more accurately called conditionally essential. The body makes plenty until it does not.
It is unusual among amino acids for being a preferred fuel rather than merely a building block. The enterocytes lining the small intestine metabolize glutamine directly, in preference to glucose, and lymphocytes do much the same. This is the basis for glutamine's long association with digestive and immune support: the cells that renew the gut lining and the cells that patrol it both run on it.
Glutamine also serves as a nitrogen shuttle between tissues and as a precursor to glutathione, the body's principal endogenous antioxidant.
Only the pure L-form is used here. The powder contains no corn, soy, yeast, wheat, sugar, starch, coloring agents, or artificial flavoring — nothing but the amino acid.
