Tyrosine takes its name from the Greek tyros, cheese — it was first isolated from casein in 1846, and the etymology has stuck for nearly two centuries. It is a non-essential amino acid, made in the body from phenylalanine, but its downstream products give it a significance out of proportion to that modest description.

Tyrosine is the precursor to the catecholamines: dopamine, then norepinephrine, then epinephrine, each made from the last in a short and well-mapped chain. It is also the precursor to thyroid hormone — thyroxine is literally two tyrosine rings with iodine attached — and to melanin, the pigment of skin and hair. Few single amino acids sit upstream of so many different systems.

The rate-limiting step is the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase, not substrate availability, which is the honest limit here: supplying more tyrosine does not simply produce more dopamine on demand. What it does is ensure the raw material is not the constraint. Research interest has centered on periods of acute stress, when catecholamine turnover rises sharply.

Used to support normal neurotransmitter synthesis and normal thyroid function. Pure powder, hypoallergenic, no fillers.

150 gram powder.
