Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein first isolated from milk in 1939, and it is present in nearly every mammalian secretion — tears, saliva, mucosa — wherever the body meets the outside world. Human colostrum is unusually rich in it. It is one of the first proteins an infant receives.

Its defining property is affinity for iron. Each molecule can hold two ferric ions, and it holds them tightly, across a wide pH range, releasing them only under acidic conditions. This makes lactoferrin a sequestering protein: it keeps free iron out of circulation, which matters because unbound iron is a potent catalyst of the Fenton reaction, the chemistry that turns hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals. By binding iron, lactoferrin limits that reaction — an antioxidant function achieved by removing the ingredient rather than by donating an electron.

It also participates in the normal regulation of iron absorption and transport, and in supporting healthy mucosal and immune function — the body's ordinary front-line housekeeping.

300 mg per capsule. Hypoallergenic, formulated without diluents, binders, or fillers, as Ecological Formulas has done since 1981.

Available in 60-capsule and larger bottles.
