Lutein is a xanthophyll carotenoid — the yellow pigment in marigold petals, egg yolks, and dark leafy greens. The name comes from the Latin luteus, yellow. What makes it interesting is not the color but where the color ends up.
The human retina concentrates lutein and its isomer zeaxanthin into a small yellow spot at its center, the macula lutea, literally the yellow spot. These are the only two carotenoids of the several dozen circulating in human blood that the eye selects for and deposits there. That selectivity is not accidental. The pigments absorb high-energy blue light before it reaches the photoreceptors, and they act as antioxidants in a tissue with one of the highest oxygen demands and light exposures in the body — a combination that generates free radicals continuously.
The body cannot synthesize lutein. Every molecule in the macula came from the diet.
This is FloraGLO lutein, the most studied commercial source, supplying 20 mg of pure lutein per softgel. It is used to support normal macular pigment density and healthy vision. Free of yeast, wheat, and soy.
60 softgels.
