Magnesium ATP

ATP does not work alone. The molecule that actually participates in nearly every enzymatic reaction in the cell is not ATP but Mg-ATP — adenosine triphosphate with a magnesium ion coordinated to its phosphate chain. The magnesium neutralizes the negative charge on the phosphates, which is what allows the enzyme to bind the molecule and cleave it. Free ATP, without magnesium, is largely inert as a substrate.

That is the reasoning behind this formula. It pairs 60 mg of ATP with 30 mg of elemental magnesium, supplying both halves of the working pair rather than the nucleotide by itself.

Magnesium is a cofactor for more than three hundred enzymes, and it is one of the more commonly under-consumed minerals in the American diet — a nutrient shortfall, not a disease. It is required for normal muscle contraction, normal nerve conduction, and normal energy metabolism. ATP is the cell's immediate energy currency, hydrolyzed and regenerated many times a day.
