Malic acid was first isolated from apple juice in 1785, and it is named accordingly, from malum, the Latin apple. It is what makes a green apple sharp. It also occurs in grapes, cherries, and rhubarb, and it is one of the compounds winemakers watch most closely, since the conversion of malic to lactic acid is what softens a wine's edge.

Inside the cell, malate is not a curiosity but a central intermediate. It is one of the eight acids of the Krebs cycle, the sequence by which mitochondria extract energy from food. Malate accepts and passes on the carbon skeletons that ultimately yield ATP, and it also participates in the malate-aspartate shuttle, which moves reducing equivalents across the mitochondrial membrane. It plays a role in normal cellular energy production.

Malic acid is also used to support normal muscle comfort and healthy muscle function, and it binds aluminum, which is one reason it appears alongside magnesium in some formulations. Here it stands alone, 600 mg per capsule, without diluents, binders, or fillers.

90 capsules, 600 mg each.
