Manganese is a trace mineral the body holds in small quantity and uses in specific places. It is the metal at the active site of manganese superoxide dismutase — the antioxidant enzyme stationed inside the mitochondrion, where oxidative damage originates and where the cell can least afford it. Nothing else substitutes for manganese in that enzyme.

It is also a cofactor for glycosyltransferases involved in building proteoglycans, which makes it a contributor to the normal formation of bone and cartilage, and for enzymes in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. Requirements are small. Absorption is poor, and it competes with iron for the same intestinal transporter, which is one reason the delivery form matters.

Picolinic acid is a metabolite of tryptophan that the body itself uses to chelate minerals for transport. Binding manganese to picolinate presents it in a form that is well tolerated and well absorbed rather than left to compete as a free ion.

Manganese is a mineral where more is not better. Take it as directed.

Hypoallergenic, with no diluents, binders, or fillers.
