Biotin was discovered through an oddity: rats fed large quantities of raw egg white developed hair loss and dermatitis, while rats fed cooked egg white did not. The culprit was avidin, a protein in raw white that binds biotin so tightly it cannot be absorbed — one of the strongest non-covalent bonds in biology. The nutrient it was hiding was named from the Greek bios, life.
Biotin is the cofactor for the carboxylase enzymes: pyruvate carboxylase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, propionyl-CoA carboxylase, and beta-methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase. These sit at the junctions where the body decides whether to build fat, build glucose, or burn an amino acid. Biotin is also required for the synthesis of keratin, which is why the vitamin is associated with hair and nails.
Megabiotin supplies 10,000 mcg of d-biotin — the biologically active isomer — per softgel. This is a deliberately generous dose. Biotin is water-soluble and not stored appreciably, and at this level it is used to support normal hair and nail strength, healthy skin, and normal macronutrient metabolism.
One note: high-dose biotin can interfere with certain laboratory immunoassays. Tell your physician you are taking it before bloodwork.
Available in 50 softgels.
