NADH is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide in its reduced, active form — the coenzyme that carries electrons down the mitochondrial transport chain, the last step by which food becomes ATP. Every cell that makes energy depends on it.

NADH also serves as a required cofactor in the body's normal synthesis of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, which is why it is associated with mental clarity and alertness as much as with physical energy. Circulating levels decline with age.
