Natto is a Japanese breakfast food: soybeans fermented with Bacillus subtilis var. natto, stringy, pungent, and an acquired taste even in Japan. In 1980, a researcher named Hiroyuki Sumi was screening substances in a laboratory in Chicago and, on an impulse, dropped some natto into a dish. The enzyme he subsequently isolated from it he called nattokinase — a serine protease produced not by the soybean but by the bacterium during fermentation.

Nattokinase supplies 50 mg standardized to 1,000 fibrinolytic units (FU) per capsule. FU is the meaningful measure here; milligrams alone tell you nothing about enzymatic activity, which is why the potency is stated both ways.

Nattokinase is a proteolytic enzyme with an affinity for fibrin, the structural protein the body deposits and then clears as part of normal hemostatic turnover. It is traditionally used to support normal fibrinolytic activity, healthy blood flow and circulation, and normal cardiovascular function. It is best taken away from food.
