Niacin is vitamin B3, and it is the precursor to NAD and NADP — the two coenzymes that carry electrons through nearly every redox reaction in the body. Deficiency was widespread in the American South well into the twentieth century, until Joseph Goldberger traced it to a corn-heavy diet rather than to contagion. Niacin plays a central role in normal energy metabolism and in the maintenance of healthy lipid levels already within the normal range.

Niacin also dilates the small vessels of the skin. This produces the flush — a warm, prickling redness across the face and chest that arrives twenty minutes after a dose and passes within the hour. It is harmless and it is well documented, but it is unpleasant enough that many people stop.

Nialipin is formulated to release its 400 mg over six to eight hours, which moderates the peak concentration responsible for the flush. If you are sensitive, begin with one tablet before increasing. Do not cut the tablets in half — doing so defeats the release matrix and delivers the full dose at once.

60 sustained-release tablets.
