Norival (N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine 300 mg with P5P)

Tyrosine is the raw material for the catecholamines. The body hydroxylates it to L-DOPA, decarboxylates that to dopamine, and from dopamine builds norepinephrine and then epinephrine — the chemistry of attention, drive, and the acute stress response. It is also the precursor to thyroid hormone and to melanin. Few amino acids carry so much downstream traffic.

The catch is that free tyrosine is not especially stable or soluble. N-acetyl-L-tyrosine is the amino acid with an acetyl group attached at the nitrogen, which improves its solubility and its stability in solution; the acetyl group is cleaved in the body, releasing tyrosine.

Pyridoxal-5-phosphate is the active coenzyme form of vitamin B6 — the form the liver would otherwise have to convert pyridoxine into. It is the required cofactor for aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, the enzyme that makes dopamine from L-DOPA. Supplying the substrate without the cofactor is half a formula, which is why both are here.
