Melatonin was isolated in 1958 by Aaron Lerner, a dermatologist who was working through forty thousand bovine pineal glands looking for a compound that lightened frog skin. He found one. It turned out to be the molecule by which nearly every organism on the planet, from algae to humans, knows what time it is.

The pineal gland produces melatonin in darkness and stops in light. Its release is the body's internal signal for night — the cue that entrains the circadian rhythm and, downstream of that, sleep onset, core temperature, and hormonal timing. Melatonin is also a capable free-radical scavenger, and unlike most antioxidants it crosses cell membranes freely.

Oncotonin supplies 10 mg of melatonin adsorbed to liposomes. Melatonin's difficulty is its pharmacokinetics: taken plainly, it has a short half-life and variable first-pass metabolism. The liposomal carrier is intended to modify how the dose is presented and released.

It is used to support normal circadian rhythm, healthy sleep onset, and the body's normal antioxidant defenses. Take shortly before bed, and store in a cool, dark place — the molecule is light-sensitive on the shelf as it is in the body.
