Pancreatin is not a single enzyme but a mixture — protease, amylase, and lipase, extracted from porcine pancreas, which is the animal pancreas closest to human in its enzymatic profile. Between them, the three cover the three macronutrients: protein, starch, and fat. The pancreas secretes them into the duodenum in response to a meal, and essentially all of the chemical digestion that follows is their work.

The 8X designation is a potency standard, not marketing. It means the preparation is concentrated to eight times the enzymatic activity of the USP baseline for pancreatin. A gram of 8X pancreatin does what eight grams of 1X would do. This matters because enzyme products are sold by weight far more often than by activity, and weight tells you very little.

Lipase in particular is worth noting: it is the fragile one, the enzyme the body has the least reserve capacity for, and fat is the macronutrient people most often notice difficulty with.
