Pantethine is the biologically active, intermediate form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) — one step further along the pathway, and the direct precursor of coenzyme A.
That distinction is the whole point. Coenzyme A sits at the center of energy metabolism: it is the molecule that carries acyl groups into the Krebs cycle, and it is required for the synthesis and breakdown of fatty acids. Pantothenic acid can be obtained from the diet, but the body must convert it — and that conversion is the bottleneck. Pantethine skips the step.
It has been studied extensively for its role in supporting healthy lipid metabolism and cholesterol levels already within a normal range, and for supporting the adrenal cortex, which depends on coenzyme A to make its hormones.
