Fumaric acid is named for Fumaria officinalis, common fumitory, the plant it was first isolated from — a European wildflower whose name in turn comes from the Latin for smoke, because the ancients thought its smell resembled it. It is also found in bolete mushrooms, in lichen, and in Iceland moss.
More to the point, it is found in every cell you have. Fumarate is one of the eight intermediates of the Krebs cycle, the central metabolic loop that extracts energy from food inside the mitochondria. Succinate becomes fumarate; fumarate becomes malate; the cycle turns. It is a fundamental molecule, not an exotic one.
Its relevance to skin comes from the observation that fumarate esters influence cellular redox signaling — specifically the Nrf2 pathway, the master regulator the cell uses to switch on its own antioxidant defenses in response to oxidative stress. Skin, being the tissue most directly exposed to ultraviolet light and environmental oxidants, is where that matters most visibly.
Each capsule supplies 120 mg of fumaric acid, traditionally used to support healthy skin. Contains no corn, soy, yeast, or wheat.
100 capsules.
