Shpilkes is Yiddish for pins and needles — the state of not being able to sit still. It is a good name for what this formula is meant to address, and a rare instance of a supplement label with a sense of humor.
The formula pairs calcium carbonate with magnesium taurate and L-theanine.
Magnesium taurate is magnesium chelated to taurine, and both halves are relevant. Magnesium is the physiological counterweight to calcium at the cell membrane: calcium drives contraction and excitation, magnesium permits relaxation. It is a cofactor in over three hundred enzymatic reactions and among the more commonly under-consumed minerals in the modern diet. Taurine, the carrier, is itself active in the nervous system, where it modulates GABA-A and glycine receptors.
L-Theanine comes from the tea leaf, isolated from gyokuro in 1949. It is associated with increased alpha-wave activity on EEG — the signature of relaxed, unforced attention.
Together they are used to support normal muscle relaxation, normal nerve function, and a settled state of mind.
