Sialic acid, more precisely N-acetylneuraminic acid, is a nine-carbon sugar that sits at the outermost tip of the glycoproteins and glycolipids studding the surface of most human cells. Its position is not accidental. Sialic acid carries a negative charge, and because every cell wears the same negative coat, cells repel one another rather than clumping. It is the reason blood flows and mucosal surfaces stay fluid.
It is also the principal sugar of mucin, the enormous glycoprotein that forms the protective gel lining the intestinal lumen. That mucus layer is the body's first physical boundary between its own tissue and the contents of the gut, and sialic acid is what gives it both its charge and its viscosity. The same compound is concentrated in human milk and in brain gray matter.
Sialex supplies 500 mg of a special mucin extract rich in sialic acid. It is used to support the normal protective mucosal lining of the digestive tract and the healthy charge properties of cell surfaces that prevent aggregation and agglutination. Hypoallergenic, without diluents, binders, or fillers.
