The lesser periwinkle, Vinca minor, is the low evergreen groundcover that spreads across shaded European gardens and old churchyards, blue-flowered and largely ignored. It contains an alkaloid called vincamine. In the 1970s, Hungarian chemists at Richter Gedeon modified that alkaloid slightly and produced vinpocetine — a semi-synthetic derivative, more stable and better absorbed than the parent compound.
Vinpocetine supplies 10 mg per capsule.
Its mechanism is unusually specific for a supplement. Vinpocetine inhibits phosphodiesterase-1, the enzyme that degrades cyclic GMP in vascular smooth muscle. Cyclic GMP is the signal that tells a vessel wall to relax. The result is support for normal cerebral blood flow — the delivery of oxygen and glucose to brain tissue, which has no capacity to store either and depends entirely on continuous supply. Vinpocetine also plays a role in normal neuronal glucose and ATP metabolism.
It is used to support healthy memory, normal concentration, and normal cerebral circulation.
Because it acts on vascular tone, those taking anticoagulant medication or managing blood pressure should speak with their physician first.
Hypoallergenic, with no diluents, binders, or fillers. Available in 60 capsules.
