Monolaurin is the monoglyceride of lauric acid — one lauric acid molecule bound to one glycerol. Its most notable natural source is human breast milk, where it forms as the infant digests milk fat, and it is also produced from the lauric acid in coconut oil. It is a lipid, and it acts like one: monoglycerides of this chain length are surfactants, molecules with a water-loving head and a fat-loving tail, which is what allows them to interact with lipid membranes.
Zinc picolinate is the second component. Picolinic acid is a tryptophan metabolite the body itself uses to chelate minerals for transport across the intestinal wall, which is a reasonable argument for using it as the carrier rather than an inorganic zinc salt. Zinc is a cofactor in more than three hundred enzymes and is one of the minerals most directly involved in normal immune function — a nutrient deficiency in zinc shows up in immune competence early.
Each capsule supplies 90 mg monolaurin and 860 mcg zinc picolinate, used to support normal immune function.
