Vitamin K takes its letter from the German Koagulation, the property Henrik Dam noticed in the 1930s when chickens on a fat-free diet began to bleed. For fifty years that was thought to be the whole story. It was not. The same vitamin activates a small family of proteins outside the clotting cascade — osteocalcin in bone, matrix Gla protein in the vessel wall — and it does so by a single chemical act: carboxylating specific glutamate residues so those proteins can bind calcium.
Uncarboxylated, they cannot. This is why vitamin K sits quietly behind the question of where dietary calcium actually ends up.
K2 supplies 100 mcg of natural menaquinone-7, the long-chain form produced by fermentation and found in traditional foods such as natto. MK-7 matters because of its half-life: measured in days rather than the few hours of K1, which means a single daily dose maintains steady circulating levels. It is used to support normal bone mineralization and healthy arterial and cardiovascular function.
If you supplement vitamin D or calcium, K2 belongs in the same conversation.
Available in 60 softgels.
